Alternative Pro Wrestling Update

From Jonathan Feltner:

The road to APW's GameChanger is beginning to take shape. As we have 3 weeks left until the event that officially starts the road to the biggest show of the year for Alternative Pro Wrestling...Freedom Fight! Two weeks ago, it was made known that Jeremy Vain had a choice from the board of directors for APW. He could 1. Participate in the GameChanger rumble on June 7th, or 2. Cash in his rumble sport for a rematch at the APW Southern States Heavyweight Championship. But, if he traded in his rumble spot for a title shot, and he failed to capture the championship, it would be his last title opportunity. The main event was set, and in the end, when the dust settled and the smoke cleared, it was Jeremy Vain successful over Jacoby Boykins. The commissioner of APW, Jacob Ashworth was furious at the outcome of the match, when it was over, he picked up Boykins off the ground and delivered a monster powerbomb to the big man. Does this mean the end of their business relationship? Who knows? But last week, Jacob Ashworth declared that he would be in GameChanger rumble on June 7th, and that he was going to win, and that he would take the title from Vain himself! "The Lethal Dose" Stryknyn is still out of action. And I was able to get a sit down interview with him a few days ago, which will hopefully air on APW's Facebook page soon, or possibly on a youtube sight. All I can say about the interview is that, I personally have never seen "The Lethal Dose" like this. When the information on where to see it comes available, I can assure you, you don't want to miss. As for the rest of the APW roster, they are all gearing up for the most unpredictable event of the year. Be there this Friday night at the APW Arena(305 Cherry Street) for lots of action and surprises. As the road to GameChanger continues. Belltime is 8:15pm. All seats $5!

Exotic Ones Part Ways with PWA

From Larry Goodman:

GWHNews has learned that the Exotic Ones are no longer with Peachstate Wrestling Alliance due to creative differences. Exotic Ones vs. Team PWA is the announced match up for War Games at the promotion's 5th anniversary show on June 1. When reached for comment, PWA owner Shane Noles said he would issue a statement once he was able to gather more information.

May 18 Peachstate Wrestling Alliance Report from Mt. Zion, GA

From Larry Goodman:

The major news flash is that PWA is returning to the Carrollton VFW Fairgrounds starting with their 5th Anniversary show on June 1 featuring a double cage War Games.

The show opened and closed with strong angles. In between, the wrestling ranged from a God awful women's match to ordinary at best. But PWA has never been about quality wrestling. Their fortunes ride on the ability to tell compelling stories and to promote the hell out of the towns they run.

The story aspect is a question mark at this point. It's story singular and that's part of the problem. PWA has precious little going for it except Exotic Ones led by Dave Wills vs. Team PWA led by Noles. Wills is a great talker but four talk segments on the same show? The Exotics (Rick Michaels, Simon Sermon, Tommy Too Much and Stoney Hooker) were running roughshod over the babyfaces (Mike Jackson, Chic Donovan, Joey Kidman and Dusty MacWilliams) and getting nuclear heat. Rather than bolstering a puny babyface side, the heels had been cooled off and cut down to size, although the irrepressible Exotics had a ton of heat on them before the night was over.

‘Raging Bull’ Manny Fernandez Lived His Gimmick

From Mike Mooneyham:

He was hot-tempered, overly aggressive and tough as a three-dollar steak.

So is there any wonder why Manny Fernandez was nicknamed “The Raging Bull?”

Fernandez earned his mat moniker the old-fashioned way — by learning the ropes from the likes of Terry Funk and Dick Murdoch, being the last one standing in bar fights, and shedding buckets of blood in rings from the Carolinas to Japan.

On the last count, Fernandez, now 58 years old, relates a story of a particularly brutal bout with Wahoo McDaniel at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago in 1988. It was an Indian strap match and so bloody that ESPN wouldn’t air it.

“The ring was covered in blood from corner to corner. The people went crazy,” Fernandez recalls.

There was no way that the main event between Jerry Lawler and Kerry Von Erich could follow it. That bout, ironically, was stopped due to blood.

“They had one little trickle of blood,” says Fernandez, who adds that neither Lawler nor Von Erich wanted to put the other over. “Wahoo and I lost it. Wayne Bloom, Mike Enos and Ray Stevens had to hold me to the ground to keep from getting at them. I wanted to kick their butts so bad.”

The fans booed, he says, and the promotion never came back. It would be the first and only AWA show to be broadcast on pay-per-view.

Carolina Wrestling News and Notes

From Jeff Richards:

Tully Blanchard will be the featured guest speaker at 3 Count Wrestling's show in Pickens, SC on Saturday 5/18. The Four Horseman Emeritus will not be wrestling, but for those who have heard him speak it is worthwhile. Featured wrestlers on the show include John Skyler, Ken Magnum, Ace Armstrong and Dirty to name a few.

KC Thunder's Smoky Mountain Wrestling has three shows scheduled with the Haywood County Fair in August. Future dealings with Harley Davidson in the Asheville area have taken a backseat due to the motorcyle company's economic downturn.

Eddie Brown's Ring Wars Carolinas (RWC) has found a new home in the 360 Elite Baseball Academy. The 10,000 square foot indoor and outdoor training facility is located in Fayetteville, NC and is a big step upward for the group. RWC will join with the Town of White Lake (NC) this Saturday to show off talent at the 35th annual "Water-fest."

Want to mention Ethan Rhymer, a brave young warrior who recently underwent skin graft treatments for a fiery accident at his home. Ethan is the young son of promoter David Rhymer ("Wicked") and his wife MaryBeth (rising superstar Alexis Parrish). The surgeries took place just days before Rhymer's biggest show of the year, over 1300 attending at the Camden (SC) Arena.

Let's end this week with a tribute to another Ethan, who recently celebrated a milestone. Ethan Cage (highspots.com founder Michael Bochicchio) turned 40 last Friday 5/10. Cage is a former NWA Mid-Atlantic Junior Heavyweight Champion and co-winner of an Anderson Brothers Classic (tag team tournament w/Jimmy Jack Funk Jr.).
